Join the Solar Sharing Scheme at Flamsteed Estate!

Flamsteed Estate currently has solar panels installed on the roofs of some of its residential buildings. We would like to introduce a solution to allow electricity generated by the onsite solar panels to be shared with you and other residents, reducing your monthly bills.

Register your interest by filling in the form at the bottom of this page.

25% of Flamsteed Estate Residents have currently registered their interest to the scheme. For the scheme to progress, we need to see substantial interest from residents. We have set a preliminary target of 50%.

Key information

The Royal Borough of Greenwich wants to support its residents, especially in the current cost of living conditions. DG Cities is exploring how the solar sharing scheme would operate for your community, and if it is something that residents would be interested in.

Community research and engagement will take place during April and May 2023 on Flamsteed estate, where residents from the following blocks can participate:

  • Kepler House

  • Dyson House

  • Baldrey House

  • Christie House

  • Cliffe House

  • Collins House

  • Halley House

  • Lockyer House

How to get involved

DG Cities wants Flamsteed residents to register their interest and share their views on the scheme and on joining. This project can only move forward with substantial interest from residents.

To register your interest and share your initial views or questions, please fill out the form below. DG Cities’ Researchers will be on the estate from the week of 1st May 2023 - watch out for more communications and come join us!

What are the benefits of taking part?

The Royal Borough of Greenwich wants to make sure that as many residents on Flamsteed Estate as possible have the chance to input into the solar sharing scheme and declare their interest.

Residents and their views will play a key role in any decision-making regarding this project.

FAQs

What do I need to do to join the scheme?

To join the scheme, you will need to register your interest. Once there is substantial interest in the scheme, we will undergo a formal sign up process. There is no commitment at this stage - we want to understand your interest and views first.

To officially join the scheme, you will be required to switch energy suppliers and allow the installation of a smart meter in your property.  You would be supported in this process. Switching your supplier is easy and can be done immediately!

Can I join at any time?

Yes, you can join the scheme at any time. However, we do need to see substantial interest from residents to go ahead with the scheme.

Can residents in a block of flats in which a microgrid is installed choose not to be part of the scheme?

Yes, residents are not required to join the scheme.

Is there any assistance provided when customers are changing providers?

Once a customer decides to sign up to the microgrid, they will be supported along the way. There will generally be no need for the customer to contact their existing supplier. The only times when this may be required is if the customer has an outstanding fees with their supplier.

What is the typical length of the installation process?

The installation of the customer meter should take around an hour.

What is the process of disconnecting from the microgrid?

If a customer would like to switch away from the microgrid to a national supplier, they will need to contact their chosen supplier, give the reference number for their property used within the electricity industry (called an MPAN number) and request a new meter to be installed at the same time as they become a customer of the supplier. Most suppliers will undertake this installation for free.
