Digital Greenwich Connect: bringing gigabit connectivity to Greenwich residents and businesses
Our sister company, Digital Greenwich Connect Ltd., formed in 2022, is an exciting new initiative which further enhances our ability to show how technologies can be used to improve our towns and cities.
DG Cities is investing, alongside ITS Technology Group, to build an open-access fibre network across the Royal Borough of Greenwich, with the specific purpose of enabling gigabit connectivity for residents and businesses. In doing so, it is supporting Greenwich Council’s core economic, social and place-based Missions set out in its ‘Our Greenwich’ Strategy, and underpinning the delivery of the next generation of public services.
The fibre network is ‘open-access’ meaning that it is available for consumer facing Internet Service providers (ISPs) to provide gigabit connectivity to homes and businesses, as well as providing back-haul for mobile phone operators (MNOs). In this way, Digital Greenwich Connect is providing the core infrastructure that connectivity providers can utilise in providing their services to consumers.
In some areas, this is increasing choice for operators alongside other network providers, but in many instances, it is providing fibre to the homes and businesses for the first time. This is key to enabling businesses to flourish, and for residents of the Royal Borough of Greenwich to benefit from ultra-fast broadband in – whether it is for entertainment, home working or education.
The joint venture brings together the considerable knowledge and experience of ITS in building and managing fibre networks, along with their credibility in the wholesale market place, with DG Cities’ expertise in urban innovation. Our joint venture with ITS ensures we have the capability to build and maintain a robust fibre network, but also to capitalise on the network to deliver the opportunities this creates.
To date:
We have completed the first phase of the network build, a 24km fibre spine in and around Woolwich, and an extension to Eltham Town Centre nearing completion.
Our fibre passes over 2000 businesses and homes.
6,000 social homes have been connected by our commercial partners.
Part-funded research into the causes of digital exclusion on two major social housing estates to inform targeted actions.
We have commenced work to map all assets in the area that can be used to further enhance fixed and mobile connectivity.
We have started work on a digital masterplan alongside the Council’s work to develop a new urban regeneration framework for its main Town Centres.
